Top 10 Newcastle United Local Heroes

8. Steve Watson

Similarly to Clark and a couple of others to come, Steve Watson is fondly remembered at Newcastle for his part in the most successful era in recent times for Newcastle United. He became the youngest player to represent the club when he made his debut in against Wolves in 1991 under Jim Smith at just 16 years and 233 days old, a record that he still holds today. Watson was a managers dream in terms of versatility and became a key player under Smith, Ossie Ardilles and most famously Kevin Keegan. Although prominently a defensive player, what summed up Watson's versatility in a rather unique way was the fact that, back in the day when positions were marked by shirt numbers, the North Shields man wore every outfield number, from 2 to 11, at least once during his Newcastle United career. Watson made a way as a solid Premier League footballer with the likes of Aston Villa, West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday after leaving Newcastle in 1998. He ended his career at Hillsbrough in 2009, but it was a five year spell at Everton between 2000 and 2005 that defined his footballing life post St James' Park. He is now helping out former teammate Clark at St Andrews as a coach.
