In comments made to Sports Illustrated in April 2008, UFC president Dana White said, "Murray is a scary son of a bitch. And I don't mean fighter-wise."

Every MMA fan should know the story of Lee Murray. It started out when he was young. He always had trouble with authority and therefore ended up getting kicked out of school and started dealing drugs. It just moved on from there and the early MMA scene beckoned for someone who was regarded as a local hardman.

Then came the story regarding Tito Ortiz. By all accounts this is unconfirmed apart from the source that is Matt Hughes. Hughes stated that Murray knocked Ortiz out cold at a time when The Huntington Beach Bad Boy was the best in the world. This just elevated Murray's cult status among fans.

Murray then ended up getting signed by the UFC. He defeated Jorge Rivera via triangle arm bar in his only fight under the banner before legal issues impeded his progress. In his last MMA fight, he took Anderson Silva the distance in 2004, but ended up losing via unanimous decision.

In 2005 Murray was involved in yet another street fight and this time came out on the wrong side of it, getting stabbed multiple times while suffering a punctured lung and a severed artery.

What occurred next is what everybody will remember Murray for; his legacy so to speak. In February 2006, Murray and a bunch of his friends took on what was the biggest cash robbery in British history. Their target was the Securitas depot in Kent, home to their take of £53,000,000.

They started out by acting as police officers and pulling over the manager of the depot. They then proceeded to kidnap him and his family at gunpoint and take them to the depot. They took all 14 employees who were working at the time hostage too and started to gather up the cash. Once they had filled their van with all of the money, they locked everyone in cash cages and made their getaway.

Murray was eventually apprehended in Morocco in late June 2006. While the other three members who were arrested in Morocco were all extradited back to the UK, Murray had Moroccan citizenship and could not be brought back to the scene of the crime.

He was initially sentenced to 10 years in a Moroccan prison, which was increased to 25 years later that year.
