2. James Milner 43 caps, 1 goal
'No chance, Hodgson loves Milner!' you might say. Yes, the Manchester City midfielder is Mr Reliable, either doing a job on the wing until he runs himself out of energy after 65 minutes or coming on for the final few seconds as England hang on to victory. But when it comes to naming World Cup squads, whittling down 30 to 23, reliable often gets jettisoned for the spectacular, the game changer, and that could mean a holiday in Malaga rather than a trip to Brazil for Milner. When it comes to wide players, England have quite a few options. Andros Townsend has impressed in his two appearances for his country, Theo Walcott will be back when fit, while Danny Welbeck has secured the left wing berth for the moment, with Jay Rodriguez set to take advantage of the United man's injury this week and Adam Lallana will also look to take his chance. Also, there are plenty of players who can operate in a nominal wide position Jack Wilshere, Ross Barkley, Ravel Morrison, Jordan Henderson and if effort and back tracking is all that is required, then Milner is not the only player who will cover the yards. In Euro 2012 Hodgson will making England hard to beat after his sudden introduction to the job. Now he has had time in control people will expect more attractive and attacking football and that may encourage Hodgson to drop his favourite son.
