World Cup 2014: 5 England Players Set To Miss Out On Brazil
3. Kyle Walker 9 caps
I'm a Walker fan, but his position in the World Cup squad is in danger because you simply do not take that many specialist full backs in the 23 man squad. Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines are shoe-ins on the left, and Glenn Johnson is first choice on the right. Theoretically, two for every position means Walker gets in but there are so many other players who can 'do a job' at right back that Walker may not make the cut. Phil Jones has yet to nail down his position for club or country but the fact he can operate in central midfield, defence and right back and plays for Manchester United means he will be in the World Cup squad, fitness depending. Hodgson is also a big fan of Chris Smalling, a player he managed at Fulham, and again the ex-Maidstone defender can play centrally and at right back, and plays for United. Walker is also very similar to Johnson, in that he is an athletic full back who is better going forward than he is defending. If the Liverpool man gets injured then Walker slots in effortlessly (and Johnson has had his injury problems recently) but what if England want to shore up the right side, perhaps hanging onto a lead with five minutes to go? Jones or Smalling would be better options than Walker, and the Spurs man may rue the utility men.
