World Cup 2014: 8 Players Who Can Win It For Their Country

2. Ezequiel Garay (Argentina)

Current Odds: 4/1

With the likes of Messi, Aguero, di Maria and Lavezzi in their squad, you might be wondering why I've selected Garay as Argentina's potential MVP.

It's been since 1986 that Argentina have won the World Cup and, in fact, it's been since 1990 that Argentina have progressed beyond the Quarter Finals on the grandest stage. In that time, Argentina has seen the likes of: Hernan Crespo and Gabriel Batistuta, Juan Roman Riquelme and Carlos Tevez, Pablo Aimar and Ariel Ortega; a plethora of highly technical, talented, attacking players whom have been unable to take Argentina beyond the Quarter Finals and back to the summit of international football.

Since 2006, you can add Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain to that list. An astounding amount of talent- who've yet to call a World Cup medal their own.

In qualifying, out of 18 matches, Argentina managed to keep a clean sheet a total of 5 times. Defensively, despite possessing some top class defenders, Argentina have been suspect for quite some time, including a humbling 4-0 defeat to Germany in 2010.

Whilst the abundance of talent going forward is mouth-watering, such performances are going to need to matched at the back if Argentina wish to win and with Garay poised to be their primary rearguard, the promising Benfica stalwart is going to need to match the magic of Messi with an equally magisterial display.

With the likes of Manchester United reportedly keeping tabs on the man, Garay has a pristine opportunity to take his career to the next level and if he capitalises on that, he could see himself on club football's grandest stage in years to come.
