World Cup 2018: 5 Things We Learned From England's First Game
1. Finishing Needs To Be Better
If there's one thing Gareth Southgate needs to get his players working on in the buildup to the Panama game, it's finishing. At this level, players simply can't afford to be missing major chances, but England were guilty of that on several occasions against Tunisia.
During the spells of English dominance throughout the match, Raheem Sterling, Jesse Lingard, Dele Alli, and John Stones all had great chances to add their names to the scoresheet, but all contrived to miss the target.
Sterling's shot was offside, but it's still worrying that he missed a relatively open goal from just a few yards, while Jesse Lingard's swing and miss at the ball was a real schoolboy error. At this level of play, the team needs to know that they won't get dozens of chances to score and they need to be more clinical in front of goal.
This is a young England squad, with players like Lingard, Sterling, Rashford, Alli, and others only having a couple of goals to their names for the national side, but this is the time for them to step up. The match against Panama should provide a few players with more opportunities to score their first World Cup goals, and Three Lions fans will be hoping to see more efficient finishing in that game.
