World Matchplay Of Darts 2014: 10 Most Likely Potential Winners

8. James Wade

James Wade, the 2007 World Matchplay champion, has had a difficult 2014 season with more lows than highs. He didn't receive a wildcard for the Premier League so missed out on one of darts biggest tournaments for the first time since he made his début in 2008. He described this as "devastating", but has since bounced back, looking to make amends for some poor TV performances. Whilst taking a break from TV majors, Wade won the Gibraltar Darts Trophy, his first title since October 2011. This gave him the faith to carry on and keep putting the necessary hours of practice in in order to achieve his best. In the first round he faces Andy 'The Pie Man' Smith, a tough opponent who has history with Wade. The pair last met on TV at the World Championships, where Smith led 3-0 in sets only to lose 4-3 after missing two match darts. He will be keen to avenge that defeat and prove that he can compete with the so-called 'big boys' of darts. Wade is the strong favourite for this clash and a dark horse for the title. He is experienced on the big stage and on his day can beat anyone. Although if Wade is to win he needs to maintain his composure on the oche and not let his mind wander into a negative state as this has so often been his downfall.
