17 Things We Learned From Newcastle Vs. Club Atlas
15. Steve McClaren Wants To Play A Certain Way And There's Nothing That Will Change That
United found themselves 2-0 down pretty quickly over in Milwaukee, but even the threat of being embarrassed by a team that is perceived to be far inferior to Newcastle didn't see the new head coach show any signs of desperation. McClaren's new look black and whites continued to keep the ball on the deck, trying to build things up from the back rather than pumping it long like they would have undoubtedly resorted to under the basic tactics of both Alan Pardew and John Carver. The centre backs continued to split every time either Tim Krul or Karl Darlow got the ball while Vurnon Anita was their first port of call every single time. It was great to see Steve keep his council and look at the bigger picture of developing an identity for his new charges rather than just a pre season game's result. And on the balance of play in the second half, The Magpies can count themselves unlucky not to have snatched a draw or even a win after such a dire first half. Newcastle won't win every game next season, but when they do inevitably go down to a defeat, they will do so in style.
