Younes Kaboul Announced As Spurs Captain

Mauricio Pochettino opts for the Frenchman to be his fearless leader.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced, via their official club website, that new boss Mauricio Pochettino has named Younes Kaboul as the new club captain with Hugo Lloris and Emmanuel Adebayor as vice-captains. The French central defender is one of the longest-serving players at White Hart Lane and has spent two separate spells at the club, having initially joined from Auxerre in July of 2007, then left for eighteen month to join Portsmouth before rejoining in January of 2010. He has now made 130 appearances in all competitions for Spurs. Following the departure of Michael Dawson to Hull City earlier in the summer, Kaboul has worn the captain's armband in all five of his competitive appearances so far this season, so it was no real surprise to see him named as such officially - that said, many people had Hugo Lloris and Jan Vertonghen down as their best bets for the job. Pochettino has spoken out about the appointment, saying this:
"Younes has shown me all the values needed to be a captain. He has the character to lead this team as well as the respect of his teammates. Hugo and Ade will be vice-captains and both of them, along with Younes, possess tremendous experience and have all shown a great attitude and leadership."
Kaboul himself has also spoken out about his joy in being given this new role:
"I am delighted to have been given this responsibility. To follow in the footsteps of some of the legendary captains that have represented this football club is a fantastic honour. It is a great achievement for me on a personal level and I hope to help lead this team to great things in the future."
It was no surprise to see Kaboul's fellow Frenchman Hugo Lloris named as vice-captain - the former Lyon goalkeeper has the captain responsibility at international level in a very strong French team - but Emmanuel Adebayor's appointment in the same role may have come as more of a surprise. The Togo international doesn't always lead by example on the pitch but, hopefully - for Spurs at least - this will give him the desire to give 100% every week.
