10 Anime That Have No Right To Be This Good
5. Beastars
Looking at pictures of Beastars without context might have you thinking it's for a certain kind of crowd who maybe like to dress up as wolves (*cough* furries *cough*), but to box it in like that would be a mistake.
Beastars takes place in a world of anthropomorphic animals, where society is divided into two categories, herbivores and carnivores. After a brutal murder at Cherryton Academy, the shy and reclusive wolf Legoshi sets off on a journey of discovery as he develops feelings for a white dwarf rabbit and searches for the killer. The story evolves from there into an epic tale of societal pressure and predatory instincts.
It's true that this description probably has you thinking, "so, it's an anime version of Zootopia?" but you're barking up the wrong tree as you shouldn't expect anything that sweet. Beastars may have a cute presentation, but it's way more dark, violent and sexual (yes, really!) than anything Disney has produced.
The show juggles so many elements. It's a compelling murder mystery with action, romance, politics and even slice-of-life school drama. With all those puzzle pieces, you'd think it would be a jumbled mess, but it handles each segment masterfully, forming the picture of a complex character study and an incredibly well-built world.
