10 Best Animated Fantasy TV Shows Of All Time

3. The Legend Of Korra

Star Wars Clone Wars
Nickelodeon

The Legend of Korra had the near impossible task of following up on what many considered to be one of the best shows ever. So many times, we see the sequels to beloved shows collapse under the weight of their own expectations. Not this one. The showrunners took the legend of Aang and evolved it to create a different but almost just as amazing a story.

From the very first opening monologue, the show underlines that while it will be paying homage to the Last Airbender, its own legacy will be very different. We hear Aang’s son, Tenzin welcome us back to this changed world. Avatar's Aang has died and his successor had been identified. From thereon, Korra picks up the mantle of the Avatar and takes on anyone and everyone who threatens the balance.

The enemies she faces however, are not the same. Instead of evil empires, Korra has to contend with anti-bending uprisings, anarchists who want to bring down the world order, rulers who want to create a new era of dark powers reigning supreme and dictators who want control for more reasons than just a lust for power. What’s really amazing is that the story is never presented as black and white. Antagonists such as Amon, Zaheer, and Unalaq, all bring valid points to the table and were driven by actual flaws in the system.

Furthermore, the show also does some retroactive storytelling by providing us with a satisfactory origin for the very first Avatar. The last box to be ticked was the various social issues addressed throughout the narrative. From finding the balance between technology and nature, to same sex couples, it was a complete story in every sense of the word.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
