4. Michael – The Good Place
Being a demon from the Bad Place doesn’t make you a bad guy. At least in the case of Michael, it doesn't. The Bad Place is a typical hell scenario where demons eternally torture dead souls, but Michael thinks he can improve it. He devises a plan where the deceased torment themselves. But as it turns out, he underestimates how well his project works and ends up torturing himself.
Michael fails constantly. So much so, that he finds himself facing early retirement, and that's not a good thing. To save face, Michael begrudgingly sides with the humans. After taking dozens of philosophy lessons, Michael still struggles with his mortality. It wasn’t until Michael faces the reality of death that the demon began to change. Finally committing himself to his friends, he risks his life to get them out of the Bad Place.
Ted Danson's character becomes obsessed with proving that the Bad Place is corrupting the process, but the entire system is rigged. No one had made it to the Good Place in hundreds of years.
Eventually, Michael and his friends devise a way to save humanity from the Bad Place. He becomes the head architect of the Good Place, but he still feels like something is missing. After some time, Michael gets to live a human life on Earth, learning what it is to be a decent person.
