Being a demon from the Bad Place doesn’t make you a bad guy. At least in the case of Michael, it doesn't. The Bad Place is a typical hell scenario where demons eternally torture dead souls, but Michael thinks he can improve it. He devises a plan where the deceased torment themselves. But as it turns out, he underestimates how well his project works and ends up torturing himself.

Michael fails constantly. So much so, that he finds himself facing early retirement, and that's not a good thing. To save face, Michael begrudgingly sides with the humans.
