Netflix's The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window is, as its title suggest, bursting with literary references, cunning murder mysteries, and an unreliable protagonist bringing it all together.

The eight-episode miniseries is short and simple, winding to a shocking conclusion as a grieving, alcoholic painter (Kristen Bell) becomes convinced she's witnessed a murder, and sets out to prove her neighbours she's not crazy.

Though its occasionally predictable story may not be the excitement everyone's looking for, the comedy-drama is even in its less inspired moments ably anchored by Bell's disarmingly deadpan performance, which often brings to mind her recent turn in the philosophical sitcom The Good Place.

Like all the best homages to a defined genre, The Woman In The House is a funny, meta take on its inspirations, but also a very exciting example of it in its own right.
