The reason that this episode easily ranks at number one is that only a show like Rick and Morty could feature an episode as wild as this, and still not jump the shark.

The premise of this episode is simple; there is a parasitic alien that infects the Smith family household by planting fake memories and multiplying, with the primary goal of taking over the planet. The idea then expands to a point where constant characters appear, and they cannot figure out which ones are real and which are not, until they find a solution, proving that if they have no negative memories of someone, then they cannot be real.

The cast of characters on array here are consistently creative. Highlights include; Reverse Giraffe, Sleepy Gary, Duck with Muscles and many many more. The character designs and personalities work purely because the show exists in a strange universe in which they can work, and this entirely highlights why Rick and Morty as a show has such a great identity.

Finally, the character of Mr Poopybutthole is an absolute fan favourite. The final joke of the episode coming at the expense of Beth shooting him but finding out he was real, was a phenomenal subversion of the episode premise.

This is the best Rick and Morty episode because it is one that no other show would have been able to do.
