Whilst the show mostly acts as an episodic exploration of comedy and science, there are a lot of overarching narrative elements that help it to be far more than an inconsequential comedy. One of the best of these appears in the fantastic Ricklantis Mixup.
The reveal of multiple Rick and Morty's helped to make the show bigger as it grasped with the concept that the Rick and Morty that we follow are unique, as opposed to what Rick would like us to believe. The council of Ricks and an almost infinite supply of Mortys is hilarious and leads to some stunning comedic moments. However, the best aspect of this concept is the character of evil Morty.
In this episode, we see a world in which Mortys are treated with prejudice whilst Rick's rule, and the rise of a politician who happens to be a Morty changes that perception. After this Morty wins the election, the grand reveal occurs, showing that all along it was the evil Morty introduced in Rick Encounters of the Rick kind. This twist didn't just make for a fun animated adult comedy, it made for memorable, compelling TV, and viewers eagerly await where the President Morty narrative will go from here.
Delving into social commentary wasn't something many were expecting for the show, but it did it excellently with genuinely funny satire and strong storytelling.
