10 Best TV Episodes Set In Just One Room
1. BoJack Horseman - Free Churro
Free Churro is the crown jewel in BoJack Horseman's superlative fifth season, and in many ways it is the ultimate bottle episode. After a brief two-minute opening flashback, the entire episode takes place at Beatrice Horseman's funeral, covering the entire eulogy given by her son BoJack.
Will Arnett performs the twenty-minute monologue to absolute perfection, and as the only speaking role in the episode (he also plays BoJack's father in the opening flashback) he more than proves his impressive range and ability as an actor.
In classic BoJack Horseman fashion, the episode is laugh-out-loud funny but also deeply poignant and moving, an emotionally resonant tour-de-force which intelligently dissects themes such as guilt, grief, abuse, empathy, and remorse without ever veering into pretentious or melodramatic territory. It's the kind of episode that makes us remember what made BoJack Horseman such a uniquely emotional and empathetic show, and the fact that it's all done in a single room by a single actor makes it even more impressive.
In the ingenious final moments after finishing his impassioned eulogy, BoJack opens the casket and realises to his horror that he is at the wrong funeral. An appropriately rueful ending for such a melancholic episode. Funny on the surface, sad underneath, Free Churro is the perfect encapsulation of BoJack Horseman both as a show and as a character.
