10 Best TV Shows That Only Got One Season
9. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
This British comedy follows a fictional author called Garth Marenghi who shows the audience footage of a series he wrote and starred in called Darkplace. This show-in-a-show takes place in a haunted hospital where the doctors regularly band together to stop paranormal threats. Marenghi claims Darkplace was cancelled because it was "too dangerous" but it's clear the show was axed for being utterly dreadful. The scenes of Darkplace are interspliced with Behind the Scenes interviews with Garth Marenghi and the "co-stars".
Darkplace spoofs amateur productions of cheesy 1980 tv series. Each episode is filled with intentionally awful special effects, sound cutting in-and-out, characters mistiming their dialogue, props falling over, laughable acting, and nonsensical plots. The best thing about Darkplace is these amateur elements are executed so masterfully, you wouldn't know you were watching a parody at a glance. If you were flicking through the channels, you would think you were watching a genuine (but terrible) series.
Due to low ratings, the show ended after only six episodes. It's ironic that Marenghi emphasises how Darkplace was cancelled because the studio didn't know how to market because that is exactly what happened to the actual show.
