10 Criminally Underappreciated Classic Cartoons
1. Laff-A-Lympics
"Battle of the Network Stars" was a one-of-its-kind event that lasted over a decade between the 70's and 80's. It brought together celebrities from ABC, CBS, and NBC to compete in Olympic style events. It's highly entertaining to watch, even today, as you can see some celebrities really get into the events. Check out the infamous race between Robert Conrad and Gabe Kaplan and you'll get the idea.
Why do you need to know about this amazing TV-crossover event when we're talking about cartoons? It's simple, because Hanna-Barbera put on the same show with its most famous animated properties in "Laff-A-Lympics".
"Laff-A-Lympics" pitted three celebrity cartoon teams featuring the likes of Yogi Bear, Scooby Doo, Huckleberry Hound, Captain Caveman and many more against one another in various athletic events across a wide-range of exotic locales.
The show was great fun, as if there would be any doubt considering it was basically a who's who of iconic characters. Surprisingly, it was the largely unknown Really Rottens that stole the show most episodes though, as their cheating consistently gave way for characters like Dynomutt and Grape Ape to get into comedic antics.
Imagine how great it would be if this series could be revived today? Shows like "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Adventure Time", and "We Bare Bears" crossing over with one another for one big event each week would be amazing to watch.
Unfortunately, without a studio like Hanna-Barbera heading up the majority of cartoon franchises these days, it's hard to imagine a version of "Laff-A-Lympics" as good as the original getting made, but it's fun to imagine nonetheless.
