10 Doctor Who Actors Who Have Gained Recognition In The US

2. Carey Mulligan

Back in 2007 the name 'Carey Mulligan' was associated with Doctor Who but now she's perhaps best known for her portrayal of Daisy Buchanan in the 2013 smash hit The Great Gatsby. The actress had a string of roles in various BBC dramas to her name before becoming somewhat of a household name as Sally Sparrow in Blink but when she found out she'd won the role in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic novel, and that she'd be playing the love interest of Leonardo DiCaprio, her face no doubt looked something like the picture above. While Carey didn't quite steal the spotlight in Gatsby, which is near impossible anyway when the titular character is notorious for his show stopping parties, she did manage to put in a stellar performance and hold her own alongside other established big screen names such as Tobey Maguire (who, coincidentally, once owned the role that the aforementioned Andrew Garfield now inhabits - see, lots of research goes into these articles). Before Gatsby she received critical acclaim for her performance in Chekhov's The Seagull, which also marked her Broadway debut, so it's great that she's finally starting to get the recognition she deserves. Doctor Who fans knew she was destined for greatness - the only sad thing for us is that she's now far too busy to ever return to the series!
