10 Doctor Who Characters Who Should Have Been Companions

Never let The Doctor go...

After living for nearly 2000 years, The Doctor has become somewhat of a legend in the universe. Their actions have reached the edges of galaxies and has travelled across dimensions. However, The Doc is usually quite picky about who they take on their adventures.

We've seen "The Fam", "The Lone Centurion", and "The Impossible Girl" all travel alongside The Doctor, and all of these companions have brought new elements to the table. Looking back at the long history of the show, it's near inevitable that we, as viewers, will be thinking about what could have been.

There have been some incredible moments and incredible characters in the Whoniverse that have never stepped foot on board the TARDIS, and these heroes were more than the perfect candidate at the time. Granted, there were more than likely issues that stopped these characters joining the show full time, but we can't help but wonder how they would have fared flying with the Time-Lord.

From criminals to historical figures, there are countless brilliant characters who be able to match wits with The Doctor, and we can't help but wonder what their tenure on the show would have been like.

10. Madame De Pompadour

It's very hard to choose what Steven Moffat's masterpiece is in the Doctor Who universe. Blink is a horror classic and his two-part stories from the Tennant era are brilliant. But an underrated gem is The Girl in The Fireplace. A fabulous time travel story that introduces audience to Madame De Pompadour, otherwise known as Reinette.

Reinette began the story as a scared child, fearful of the monsters under her bed. However, throughout the episode we see her grow and become a strong character who can hold her own without The Doctor's assistance. Sadly, Reinette meets a tragic end as The Doctor misses their final goodbye, and that ending leaves us wanting more of that relationship.

It is in this episode that we see a little bit more of The Doctor's past and it is actually Reinette who asks about his history. During a psychic link, she sees into his past and that leaves the door open for this to explored. The chemistry between David Tennant and Sophia Myles is phenomenal and would have made for a great duo post-Rose Tyler.
