8. Rick Fights The Devil - Something Ricked This Way Comes

Rick doesn't particularly care who he challenges. Alien overlords? Yep. The President of the United States? No problem. The Devil, the physical embodiment of all evil in the universe? Absolutely.

In this episode, Summer finds a job at a new store, Needful Things, run by, of course, Mr Needful. Needful looks like a stereotypical Devil-masquerading-as-a-human: pointy goatee and pencil moustache, elaborate black suit, top hat. When he gifts Rick with a microscope that would allow him to see 'the secrets of the universe', Rick, being Rick, doesn't trust anyone and breaks down the magical gift with science.

When he returns to the store to confront Needful, their argument starts as a series of gentlemanly insults ('I find this all quite preposterous!' 'Oh, I say good sir, oh, harrumph...'.) Needful threatens to call the police, Rick calls Needful a hack, and suddenly they are exchanging...well, not fists, but slaps, as well as insults, including Rick's topper 'Cocky-ass motherf*cker'. All in the name of proving science is better than magic.

Summer's subsequent admission that she knows she works for the Devil, but doesn't care, and in fact admires him more than Rick, is a nice capper. It speaks volumes when you'd rather work for the lord of hell than hang with your grandfather.
