Star Trek: Discovery had some big statements to make when it arrived in 2017. Here was the return to Star Trek after a gap, on television, of more than ten years. While Star Trek: Enterprise had employed CGI successfully in its run, Discovery now had access to a much larger budget. To that end, the audience was offered an entirely new-looking fleet in The Vulcan Hello and Battle Of The Binary Stars.

Starfleet's arrival to back up the USS Shenzhou displayed the new mission statement for Star Trek: we've got toys to play with now. The sheer number of new ship classes on display was dazzling.

The Cardenas class. The Walker class. The Malachowski class. The Hoover class. The Engle class. The Nimitz class. The Shepard class. The Magee class.

While we were also introduced to a host of new Klingon ships, this fleet seemed to warp in to remind the audience that Starfleet really was a power to be reckoned with. The almost immediate destruction of said fleet then reminded us that the Klingons were not to be trifled with either.

The eponymous battle took place in the decade before The Original Series, which did cause a few raised eyebrows in the audience. Where exactly were these ships while Kirk was zooming around the quadrant? If the outcome of this battle is anything to go by, while the fleet's arrival was outstanding, the ships' efficiencies may not have been.
