9. Brokeback Mountain Fans Send Rewrites To Its Author
Sometimes, you can become really invested in a piece of fiction. You love the characters and the world they inhabit, and are engrossed in the narrative. But sometimes there's that little thing you don't like. That tiny element which, in your eyes, brings down the story. The more active fans might take to discussing this online and writing alternate endings that they think strengthens the story. I should know. I've done it myself. But there's writing fanfic that alters plot developments you don't like and there's what some Brokeback Mountain fans decided to do. The core of Brokeback Mountain is the romantic and sexual relationship between the two male lead characters and them ultimately not being able to be together, and one of the story's prominent themes is homophobia and its negative effects. But some fans weren't happy with this bittersweet ending and starting writing alternate versions, some of which were incredibly explicit. But not content with just writing these Fix-fics, some fans actually sent them to the author Annie Proulx's home address. Given that she's spent years being inundated with people trying to better her work, completely missing the point of it, and fan-written Brokeback Mountain porn, it's unsurprising that she claims she wishes she'd never written the book in the first place.
