10 Most Adult Moments In Batman: The Animated Series

7. Barbara Gordon's Death - Over the Edge

A lot of DCAU fans tend to have some mixed feelings when the original animated series changed to the more slick format of The New Batman Adventures during its fourth season.

Although it was nice to see people like Nightwing and Robin in the mix more often, the inclusion of villains like Farmer Brown and the awful redesign of the Joker definitely had people scratching their heads. As slick as some of these looked though, Over the Edge is the one episode of the series that had its foot on the gas from the opening frame.

Opening with Batman exposed and outrunning Commissioner Gordon's police, we get the backstory of Batgirl's last night of crime fighting. Trying to go after the Scarecrow (with still one of the best designs), Barbara Gordon appears to have gotten the jump on him before being thrown off the edge of a building and onto her father's squad car.

That's just the beginning though, with the entire Bat family falling apart as a result, from Alfred being taken into custody to Tim Drake being told to turn himself in to the police before anything too dangerous happens. While the actual ending may be considered a bit of a cop out for some fans, this was still some intense stuff for people who were just expecting a sparring session with the Joker.
