10 Most Controversial Stargate Episodes
2. Stargate Universe, Season 1 Episode 16 - Sabotage
Modern television has been slowly but surely integrating more diverse roles for actors to engage in, as both beloved main and secondary characters. This overall positive change in pop culture has brought with it an entire generation's worth of controversy in franchises handling of this new world of diversity and representation, in both a positive and negative light.
For Stargate fans, the latter was the case in the sixteenth episode of Stargate Universe. In that episode, fans were introduced to the character of Doctor Amanda Perry, a quadriplegic lesbian who used ancient technological stones to body swap with a crewmember of the Destiny in order to help the crew with it's ever encroaching rationing problem.
The introduction of this diverse character wasn't controversial, but the way in which the character was treated in both her sexuality and her physical state caused some uproar among fans.
The real controversy of this episode came after it was revealed her character description for Sabotage's script described the character as "physically useless" which many viewed to be incredibly insensitive towards disabled personnel.
The portrayal of the doctor's sexuality in the episode itself was also viewed by many LGBTQIA+ organizations as just plain wrong. This was because the use of the body swap technology led to the character having a heterosexual relationship with her partner back on Earth.
This controversy led many LGBTQIA+ fans and critics to agree this episode was not very inclusive towards their community, even though actress Ming-Na Wen has come out in defense of that episode's decision.
