8. They Are All Actually Living In An Asylum
In the episode 'Curriculum Unavailable' Abed is sent to therapy by the rest of the group after their expulsion, who accompany him because he won't go on his own. In there they are led to the conclusion that they have all been in an asylum called Greendale and the whole thing was a collective work of imagination to help them through the time they have spent there.
This is debunked by the group when they remember things together that couldn't have been taking place in an asylum. They then go back, and it is revealed that the therapist works for Chang, who has taken over Greendale and wants to keep them away.
It has been theorised by a fan on Reddit called /MaximumEnigma/ that all of this could have been a further layer in their shared asylum experience, as let's face it, Chang is also a complete psychotic who spends most of his time trying to take over and control power.
When the end of the series arrives, this is simply new patients arriving and old patients being transferred or being released having realised that they are all in an asylum.
