The Enemy of the World is a great story that features Patrick Troughton pulling double-duty as both the Second Doctor, and the evil dictator Salamander. There's one last bit of mistaken identity in the serial's final scene, which unfortunately feels like a rather obvious plot twist.

The Doctor emerges from the devastation of the Research Centre, still in Salamander's clothes, which are torn and dusty. He's a bit shaken, but still appears to retain his faculties. The Doctor then decides to return to the TARDIS so as not to be mistaken for Salamander in the chaos.

There's then a sharp cut from the Doctor escaping the explosion to emerging on the beach slightly dazed and confused – the first indication that something is amiss. And then there's the more dazed, wordless performance Troughton gives – because Salamander doesn't want to give the game away by talking in a Mexican accent!

Nothing quite adds up, and so we're all frantically willing Jamie and Victoria to realise this is actually Salamander! It's a good example of an obvious plot twist that adds to the fun of the episode, and there's a genuine feeling of relief when we hear the actual Doctor's voice from the doorway of the TARDIS.
