10 Most Shocking Betrayals In Star Trek

2. Michael Eddington - For The Cause

When Michael Eddington was introduced to Deep Space Nine, he was every inch the Starfleet man. He was duty-bound and seemingly his loyalties were to Starfleet command over Sisko himself. He sabotaged the Defiant so that the cloaking device could not be used in the rescue of Odo and Garak, as that had been prohibited by his superiors. Frankly, he was stuffy career man, one who could easily have been forgotten.

Late in the fourth season, in a twist that no one saw coming, Eddington reveals himself to have become a member of the Maquis, firing a phaser at Major Kira during his escape. This was a man who had been in almost two seasons worth of stories and had established himself on board the station.

His story could still have ended there but the writers decided to pursue it, having Sisko hunt the man down. In one of Sisko's darker moments, he follows Eddington and then authorises the deliberate poisoning of a planet to force him out of hiding. This was one of the many differences that Deep Space Nine had from the other entries in the franchise - it was not afraid to go to the darkest places. Sisko actively destroys a world as revenge for the betrayal of the Starfleet uniform.

Eddington would reappear one more time to somewhat redeem himself in the rescue of the final survivors of the Maquis, earning something of Sisko's respect. While not the greatest betrayal on this list, Eddington's was the one that left some of the deepest scars.
