10 Most Underrated Sci-Fi/Fantasy Shows
2. Krypton
Who knew a Superman show without any Superman could work so well. The best thing about Krypton is that despite being centred around a superhero plot, there is very little superhero stuff going on. Instead the shows explores themes of caste based profiling, abuse of power and religious exploitation.
And while Kal-El himself may be missing, we do still get plenty of major Superman adversaries. First its General Zodd who makes his way back in time to prevent the future where he is constantly defeated by the Man of Steel, there is also Doomsday who gets his best live action adaptation yet on this show, and finally looming over it all is Brainiac. The Collector of Worlds plays the main villain of the show and it’s his actions that become pivotal in deciding whether or not the future remains what it was.
Season 1 sees Seg-El, Kal’s grandfather scratch and claw for survival after his family have been stripped off their rank and forced to live in poverty, thanks to the conspiring Daron-Vex. His already tumultuous life goes into full crazy mode when he is visited by a time traveller from the future named Adam Strange, warning him that his grandson, the greatest hero in the universe, is in danger of being wiped from existence due to interference in past events from one of his enemies.
We see Seg grow from a battle hardened conman into a true hero who defies the odds to save his people and planet. The show is paced to perfection, with the tension and violence levels raised at the right times for maximum effect. Top quality, perhaps underrated.
