Doctor Who Voyage Of The Damned

Who knows if it was the casting of Kylie Minogue as the one off companion, a build up of momentum from previous seasons, the premise of an episode set on the Titanic or just general love for Mr Tennant, but this is the most watched story in NuWho history. The fact that the episode was a Christmas Day special definitely helped the viewing figures as well, with all factors playing a part in Doctor Who crashing through the 13 million mark for the first time in the modern series.

There is plenty of mischief afoot with the deliberate sabotaging of a space flight, killing nearly all on board. The remaining passengers are then brutally taken down by angel looking hosts, before the Doctor leads the few survivors on a mission not too dissimilar to The Poseidon Adventure.

The episode is unfortunately a bit of a disappointment, the realisation that the Doctor wasn't on the actual Titanic a letdown that the special never recovers from. Tennant is excellent as usual, but the very dark tone isn't befitting of the festive spirit, and the manner in which the main villain is defeated comes across as ridiculously camp rather the intended heartbreaking moment it was meant to be. There is also some Jesus-Doctor metaphors which are a little inappropriate and silly.

Still, it is, and will most likely remain for the foreseeable future, as the most viewed episode of NuWho.

While he likes to know himself as the 'thunder from down under', Luke is actually just a big dork who loves all things sport, film, James Bond, Doctor Who and Karaoke. With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
