10 Overlooked TV Shows You Should Watch
1. Riget (The Kingdom)
Before arthouse filmmaker Lars Von Trier started needlessly baiting controversy, he was one of the makers of this truly original television series; a sort of fusion of Twin Peaks, The Shining, and E.R.
Riget deftly fuses dark situation comedy, ghost stories, supernatural horror, and medical drama into one compelling package, increased in affective potency by a relatively realist, documentary style of filming. The initial main plot concerns the search by a spiritually sensitive patient to discover the truth behind the sound of a girl crying in the elevator shaft, meanwhile a regular subplot sees Swedish doctor Stig Helmer, who has newly arrived at the Danish hospital, attempt to cover his involvement in a botched operation. From these beginnings, Riget branches out and expands into areas and subject matter seldom if ever found on television. Riget is not for the faint hearted but will be a rich reward for those who take a chance on it.
When seeking this one out, make sure to avoid Stephen King's abysmal US adaption as King's ear for horror was already waning when he decided to rip Riget out of Europe and awkwardly transplant it on American soil, effectively ruining everything about it in the process.
