10 Problems With The X-Files Revival Nobody Wants To Admit
5. It May Try To Ignore A Lot Of Late Season Developments
The final X-Files seasons took a lot of criticism over three things: the lack of David Duchovny, the Baby William storyline, and the addition of new characters.
The WIlliam storyline was the most valid complaint. Any time a show adds an infant, it feels like a ratings grab. In this case, it was also a distraction - something to keep the focus on Mulder and Scully without Mulder even being there.
Duchovny, meanwhile, was clearly bored of the show, and as much as it may seem sacrilege, his presence probably wouldn't have helped things. Which leaves the addition of new characters: John Doggett. Monica Reyes. Brad Follmer.
While Follmer was never really developed, Doggett and Reyes were. Production company 1013 no doubt hoped they would be a new Mulder and Scully. Robert Patrick's Doggett, in hindsight, was exactly what the show needed - but fans at the time weren't ready to accept him, despite a Saturn Award winning portrayal. Reyes (Annabeth Gish), meanwhile, was a little too new-agey: a character who made Mulder seem grounded.
Given the misguided distaste for these new characters, the revival may try to bury all mention of them - which would be a mistake. If nothing else, Robert Patrick earned his place in The X-Files cannon, and was the highlight of many late-season episodes (including the spectacular ninth season episode John Doe).
