10 Reasons Maniac Is The Best Netflix Original Series Since Stranger Things
1. Cary Fukanaga's Direction
He may have already made a name for himself with True Detective and Beasts Of No Nation, but Cary Fukanaga outdoes himself here. Bringing an immensely-cinematic feel to every moment, the show never feels like it's in the wrong hands. The long panning shots across the research lab, extreme close-ups used at key moments, and the one-take fight scenes are all times where Fukanaga elects to ignore what's standard and go for something more visually-striking.
The way that each reality feels immensely different through sheer color-coding and cinematography makes the shifts so much easier to automatically register, assisting greatly with the avoidance of any major confusion. He lets scenes go on and breathe, refusing to let any scene become wasted potential. His visually-pleasing style and usage of color works in tandem with every set and location to catch your attention and never let it stray.
If Maniac had shifted directors between episodes, there would have been a visual standard that could've potentially been lost, leading to inconsistency. Thankfully, Fukanaga was in the driver's seat all season, and the show benefits greatly from it.
