10 Saddest TV Character Exits That Made You Cry

8. Troy Barnes - Community

Community Troy Abed
NBC

Actor Donald Glover's stock as Childish Gambino was on the rise, and he had started to outgrow the cult sitcom. The show itself made no attempt to hide Troy's leaving; his last episode is a game of 'the floor is lava' to say goodbye.

So far, so Community. The school had shut down on multiple occasions before, for huge paintball battles parodying (amongst other things) Star Wars and Mad Max. But there's something lurking under the surface. The game is organised by Abed, Troy's best friend. In fact, they seem to be each others' only friends. Abed has fairly severe Aspergers, while Troy is a childish jock who intentionally injured himself because he knew he didn't have what it took to go pro. The two need each other.

As the game goes on, Abed becomes more competitive and less stable. Eventually, it's revealed that Abed has convinced himself the floor really is lava. He's so desperate for Troy to stay - and his mental health so threatened by his only friend leaving - he's determined to keep playing forever. Troy is able to talk him around and the pair share a wholesome goodbye as Troy sails away... from the parking lot.
