1. “D’oh” Was Inspired By Laurel And Hardy

Many fans have wondered over the years what exactly is the origin of Homer’s catchphrase - “D’oh”, a grunt that he often exclaims when he is angry or annoyed.

Well, according to Castanella, it was influenced by the classic films of the comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy. These films would recurrently feature Scottish actor, Jimmy Finlayson, who would often exclaim a drawn out “dooooh”, which in itself originated as a minced oath to take the place for “damn”.

Also, originally, Castanella would say the phrase in the same, drawn out way. However, Groening changed this - stating that it would fit the animation better if the phrase was more short and sweet. Therefore, “D’oh” was born.
