The X-Files Revival: 10 Things We Learned From 'Founder's Mutation'

6. Scully Is Still A Believer

One of the things that made the later seasons of The X-Files so unsettling for certain fans was that Scully was no longer in her traditional role as a skeptic, but had become a believer, playing Fox Mulder to new X-Files agent John Doggett. It was so jarring that despite a fantastic, award winning effort by Robert Patrick, fans just couldn't take to it (oh, and David Duchovny's lessened involvement in the show might have been a factor back then too). Well, guess what, Scully hasn't changed back to full time skeptic. Sure, she was doubtful of the zany conspiracy theories of Tad O'Malley in My Struggle, but then, he came off sounding like a Flat Earth Truther. In Founder's Mutation, however, Scully has two scenes in which she proves to be a believer: the hospital scene in which Augustus Goldberg's ex-wife is interviewed, where Scully believes the woman's story of her unborn child speaking to her telepathically, despite all the odds against it, and in confronting Goldberg himself, accusing him of using alien DNA in his experiments. Goldberg's reaction was classic: "I thought you were the rational one?"
