10 Thrilling TV Moments When Characters Finally Learned The Truth

6. Vincent Sees The Future (Doctor Who)

When the Doctor and Amy meet Vincent van Gogh, he believes his work will have little value to anyone else. Of course, after ironic teasers like this throughout the episode, the Doctor then takes him to his own exhibit in our time, where the brilliant Bill Nighy (as an art curator) delivers a heartfelt monologue in which he declares that van Gogh was "the finest painter of them all", unaware that the man himself is standing only a few feet away. Vincent breaks down into tears and hugs the curator, who looks confused but touched. The scene is beautifully directed and then undercut by Amy's frustration that Vincent still committed suicide at 37 despite his newfound knowledge of his future. The Doctor reminds her that he can't fix everything, but that they added to Vincent's good memories all the same. The emotional impact of this episode all makes sense when you realise it's written by Richard Curtis, who seemingly can't help but make us cry.
