10 Tragically Romantic Doctor Who Episodes

This Christmas special sees the Doctor meet up with Astrid, a waitress who works on a star ship called the Titanic.

There are some charming moments between the Doctor and Astrid in this episode. He comes to her defence after a rude passenger tells her off, and then manages to sneak her to Earth on shore leave. So, it’s not surprising that Astrid starts to become fond of the Doctor, flirting a little and eventually asking to come travelling with him – to which he happily agrees. As usual though, things go wrong, as the ship is struck by meteors. The Doctor, Astrid, and a small band of the passengers survive the smash, but then have to stop the ship from crashing into Earth. It’s a dangerous task, and most of the group die, including Astrid, when she goes to save the Doctor.

Most sad of all is a scene where, for a moment, the Doctor thinks he can bring her back through her teleport bracelet. There isn’t enough power however, and so instead he simply kisses her goodbye and then lets her atoms float off into space, so she can travel as she wished.
