10 TV Characters Whose Fates Are Never Resolved
2. Tony Soprano - The Sopranos
Surely no TV character's fate has been more obsessively debated than that of The Sopranos' mob boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), who in the series finale may or may not have been killed.
The show's final ever scene sees Tony and his family meeting at a diner as Tony ponders the likelihood of his impending indictment. Just as his daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) is about to enter the restaurant, Tony looks up and the screen cuts to black. The End.
Some have interpreted the sudden ending as an indication that Tony was shot dead by one of the many suspicious characters briefly glimpsed in the diner, especially given Bobby Bacala's (Steven R. Schirripa) haunting comment on assassination earlier in the season - "You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?"
Others feel that the ending simply indicates that Tony will be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life, and the fact that Journey's accompanying song "Don't Stop Believing" ends on the lyrics "don't stop" has also been interpreted as "evidence" that Tony didn't die.
While it's possible that the upcoming Sopranos prequel, The Many Saints of Newark, could explain away the ambiguous ending, it's such an ingeniously slippery send-off for the character that it'd be a shame to lift the veil, honestly.
