10 TV Shows That Have Already Been Cancelled In 2021

4. Shrill

I May Destroy You
HBO

Shrill is the Hulu series starring Aidy Bryant that is about a plus-size woman attempting to succeed in her career and relationships, despite bad boyfriends, a perfectionist boss and conventional beauty standards. The show is returning for a third season on 7th May 2021, which will be its last.

With strong ratings, Shrill has been praised for avoiding some of the cliches around larger women in media. It is less about learning to accept oneself than it is about society accepting fatness. It is based on the memoir by Lindy West. Critic Kelly Lawler reviewed the first series, describing it thusly:

Shrill” flies past positivity and shoots for fat acceptance, a more radical push for inclusion and embrace of different body types by society.

There has been criticism that the show is not as deep as it claims to be. Rather, some of its messages paint unarguable points about modern manners, writes Hank Steur. He feels that it opted for the low bar rather than something more substantial. Yet the overall ratings for the show disagree with this assessment, as it sits at a comfortable 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Bryant has received particular praise in the lead role.
