4. Vikings
Delving into Norse legends we find Ragnar Lothbrok, King of Denmark and Sweden, raider of England and France, and the lead protagonist of the History Channel's historical drama 'Vikings'.
Vikings depicts Ragnar Lothbrok's rise to power in 9th Century Scandinavia. Having organised raids to the West against the wishes of Earl of Haraldson, who sees no reason the cease their raids in the Eastern Baltic, Ragnar takes a crew of volunteers and lands on the shores of England, where they immediately sack a monastery.
Ragnar combats all adversaries both in foreign lands they are invading and in the hierarchy of his own people, eventually becoming King of Kattegat. After losing a battle in Paris, Ragnar disappears for a decade, leaving his family and kingdom to fend for themselves.
After returning to England once again, Ragnar is taken captive by King Ecbert and handed over to King Aella, who intends to torture Ragnar and convert him to Christianity. Ragnar refuses and is subsequently killed when Aella has him thrown into a pit of poisonous snakes.
Vikings continued with new emphasis being placed on the warring between his ex-wife, Lagertha, and his surviving children, Bjorn, Ubbe, Hvitserk, and Ivar. Partway through season 6 at the time of writing, Vikings has continued to see stellar ratings and retained a high viewership.
