10 Unanswered Doctor Who Mysteries

9. How Did The Master Survive?

THE DOCTOR S DAUGHTER
BBC

This mystery is one that can be asked of The Master on several occasions throughout the modern series, but never as much as in recent times. The iconic Who villain first returned during Russell T Davies era as show runner, with a sound explanation at hand as to how he returned in the first place, and again when he was 'resurrected' for the End of Time story.

But the mystery of how The Master has survived since then has been much harder to track. While Missy, the Female form of the Master, was seen to have regenerated after she ironically killed her prior self, it is still a mystery as to how John Simm's Doctor escaped Gallifrey. Was he frozen in a single moment of time with his fellow Timelords? Was it he who broke the Timelords free?

The return of The Master in the most recent season poses even more questions. Sacha Dhawan's reveal as the Doctor's old nemesis came as a mighty big shock, especially considering the apparent permanent death of 'Missy' at the end of the 10th season.

The answer to the mystery of the villain's reappearance may come with the reveal of where Dhawan's Master fits into the show's timeline. The use of miniaturising technology was very much the ammunition of classic era Masters, as was the idea of taking the form or body of someone he had killed.

One feels that we will receive answers for this mystery, with this writer hoping Dhawan's Master predates Delgado's original interpretation.
