10 Vikings Fates Worse Than Death
2. Losing Your Mind
Grief, guilt, trauma, they all manifest themselves in strange ways, and of all the Ragnarsson, Hvitserk learned that lesson the hardest.
Hvitserk was often considered the most unremarkable of all Ragnar's children. As time went on, he found himself switching alliances constantly and being lead wherever he went, never truly coming into his own as a man, but that was just the beginning of his torment.
After losing his love Thora and feeling responsible for it through his support of Ivar, Hvitserk's life began to unravel. As a result of his declining mental health and addictions to mushrooms and alcohol, he became a shell of the man. His mind was in constant duress, and his afflictions began to harm his physical health as well.
But, it wasn't just Hvitserk who suffered, as he also ended up hurting those around him, most notably Lagertha, who he killed in a hallucinogenic frenzy. Naturally, this led to him being branded a Skogarmaor, adding even more fuel to this blazing inferno of misery.
Thankfully, Hvisterk would eventually get his act together, but it was a long hard road. Let's just say, Vikings are not very understanding people.
