6. Conventions Of Space And Time
After Abed's favourite show - Cougar Town - came to an end, he needed something to fill the void it left, and that came in the form of Inspector Spacetime. This lovingly campy parody of the classic UK series Doctor Who was a great addition not only to the show but to Troy and Abed's dynamic. Giving them something to bond over - other than Kick-Puncher - did a lot for them, but this episode didn't.
Conventions of Space and Time gives you exactly what you read on the tin. It shows as the Study Group venture to an Inspector Spacetime convention and break up into separate stories. This marks the first criticism of the episode, in that there's a little too much going on. Bringing the whole cast into it made little sense as this should have been entirely centric on Troy/Abed.
Too many plots wasn't the only issue, as some of the side attractions had problems that worked counterintuitively towards their characters. This was especially clear with Annie, who spent the outing pretending to be Mrs Winger. This might have been a move a younger Annie would make, but she had grown up by this point, and it felt far too regressive for her.
