On Christmas 2013, Silence fell and the question was asked. Matt Smith had one final adventure as the fantastical 11th Doctor, who had been saving galaxies and entertaining Whovians at home for over three years. The centuries long battle of Trenzalore was ended by attack of the killer regeneration and the Doctor was rewarded a new regeneration cycle by the Time Lords. In his final moments, the 11th Doctor wasn't distressed at the thought of regenerating like the 10th Doctor was, and instead gave a eulogy to his current form remaining very optimistic about the nature of change in our lives. The 11th Doctor's regeneration scene is heart breaking enough on its own but the moment within the scene that really drove this regeneration emotionally was when the Doctor hallucinates the very first person he had met as the 11th Doctor, Amy Pond both as a child and as an adult. The vision of Amy walks up to the regenerating 11th Doctor, touches his face and whispers "Raggedy Man...Goodnight", making the transition to his next body easier for him. Karen Gillian was awesome enough to reprise her role as Amy Pond for one last scene, the 11th Doctor's swan song. The Doctor has had close relationships with companions in the past but the 11th Doctor and Amy Pond had such great chemistry as an adventurous duo, that it felt right that there would be one more scene between the Doctor and Amy Pond before the 11th Doctor was gone for good. Clara is a great companion who will be carried over to the 12th Doctor, but Amy Pond was always solely an 11th Doctor companion. Amy Pond's final appearance along with the following moment where the 11th Doctor drops his bow tie made the reality of the 11th Doctor's exit hit fans all the more harder.
