An Adventure In Space And Time was an excellent biopic about the origins of Doctor Who as a BBC programme and gave William Hartnell's (brilliantly played by David Bradley) time as the First Doctor some well deserved recognition. Mark Gatiss lived up to his promise of providing a love letter to the series and writes An Adventure In Space and Time with many fun nods to the classic series (the origin of the TARDIS landing sound revealed to be car keys dragged on piano wire) however there is one shining moment that connects the past with the 2013. In the final moments of An Adventure In Space and Time, it is 1966 and William Hartnell is about to film his regeneration episode "The Tenth Planet" complete with old school Cybermen costumes. Hartnell in full 1st Doctor garb, flips the TARDIS control console on one last time as he looks at the camera and smiles. We then see that William Hartnell is in fact looking at an apparition of Matt Smith's 11th Doctor, who fifty years from the day Doctor Who premiered, will be carrying on the legacy that Hartnell started all those decades ago. The 11th Doctor and the 1st Doctor don't say anything to each other, they just share a look that only men who have played the Doctor could have and together they launch the TARDIS into one more flight. This moment was a combination of the meta fiction from the biopic, nostalgia from the classic Doctor Who series, and the enthusiasm brought on by the 2005 revival. It was an unexpected cameo by Matt Smith and was a great tribute to the days of long ago, William Hartnell, and everyone who made an Doctor Who into a television show in the first place.
