12 Saddest Bojack Horseman Episodes
3. A Free Churro - S5E6
With the exception of the flashback to Butterscotch verbally abusing his son, this entire episode is BoJack's eulogy at his mother's funeral. At the beginning he is clearly uncomfortable and tries to turn it into a stand up act in some regard, and telling that the only good thing that came from his mother's death is that he got a free churro when he ordered fast food.
He joked that she was a terrible mother, that she was never proud of him and never cared for his comedy, but the last sentence she ever spoke really got through to him. She didn't tell him she loved him or that she was proud, but simply said 'I see you', something which gave BoJack comfort and meant a lot to him, as he was expecting one last jab about how he let her down.
BoJack's childhood was so terrible that he actually envied the orphans on Horsin' Around, because they could imagine their parents to be anything. But his mother's simple dying sentence seemed to calm him, as the closest thing to a connection they ever had. He was at peace with her passing until he realised she didn't say 'I see you', she was simply reading the ICU sign in the hospital.
This upset BoJack as he never actually got the connection and the closure that he thought this moment with his mother gave him, and now that she was gone, there was absolutely no chance of ever getting it. His mother died, and he got nothing but a free churro.
