13 Doctor Who Guest Stars Who Were Tragically Underused

4. Suranne Jones

Fans will never forget Suranne Jones' portrayal of The Doctor's Wife in the 2011 adventure of the same name and it's no surprise that the episode, written by Neil Gaiman, has gone on to hold a particular significance within the show's mythology. It was a true match made in heaven when the Time Lord came face to face with the TARDIS in physical form and Matt Smith's chemistry with Suranne was sizzling from the get-go. Some viewers initially doubted Suranne's guest stint in the series following her previous appearance as Mona Lisa in The Sarah Jane Adventures (another role for which the actress didn't receive the recognition she deserved) but as soon as she appeared as the consciousness of the Doctor's beloved blue box, in all its enchantingly erratic glory, it was pretty much universally accepted that it was a role she was born to play (well, her and Helena Bonham Carter, but Suranne is definitely the next best thing). Suranne is another example of a Doctor Who guest star who managed to steal the show and while, like Tony, she wasn't necessarily underused, she has definitely proven that she's worthy of a second outing. Her return would perhaps detract from the importance of this episode but for many the prospect of seeing the Doctor and Idris back together would be too good to resist.
