13 Doctor Who Guest Stars Who Were Tragically Underused
5. Tony Curran
Tony Curran's portrayal of Vincent van Gogh remains as one of the standout performances from a Doctor Who guest actor and his starring episode, Vincent and the Doctor, is also one of the most beloved in the show's history. That's no doubt largely down to the fact that it was written by the award-winning Richard Curtis but Tony's performance as the troubled painter is also a defining factor that has contributed to its ongoing acclaim. As Doctor Who guest roles go, this one was particularly challenging and Tony put in a show stealing performance which brought the emotional honesty and tribulations of one of history's most notable artists to life in a way that has never been managed before. The final scene in the museum stands out as one of the most memorable moments in Doctor Who history and the episode has even won awards for its representation of mental illness. Tony is a huge part of its success and, while he wasn't underused in the episode itself, he's been included on this list because it's a shame he couldn't have tagged along in the TARDIS for an extra episode or two. That would've detracted from the overall significance of his one off appearance, of course, but it's nice to speculate nonetheless.
