Christopher Eccleston's performance as the ninth incarnation of the Doctor is yet another interpretation of the character which is described as 'darker' and 'edgier' than others and, while it's true his performance lends the role a certain degree of gravitas that other actors had failed to bring to the table, his Doctor is actually more of an optimist than previous incarnations.
